Perhaps one of the most eagerly anticipated seasonal vegetables for many, the annual return of Pembrokeshire Earlies PGI has become a notable date in the calendar!


From June to Early September, Castell Howell welcomes Blas y Tir’s award-winning Pembrokeshire Earlies PGI to their fresh produce offering, allowing customers to get their hands on the very earliest potatoes of the new season!


The largest supplier of Welsh produce in Wales, Pembrokeshire based Blas y Tir is the proud home of award-winning fresh produce. Supplying major retailers & wholesalers across the country, Blas y Tir’s focus is providing a wide variety of Pembrokeshire Early Potatoes PGI and Welsh Leeks PGI all grown and packed in Wales.


The Importance of our Farmers Blas y Tir’s growers are at the heart of everything they do. “Working closely with our team of expert farmers & in house Agronomy team, we can work collaboratively to ensure that the product we supply stays true to its roots, keeping complete

traceability throughout the supply chain and driving the highest quality.” explains Matt Thomas, Head of Sales and Marketing at Blas y Tir. “With the knowledge of our dedicated farmers, who have been working the land for generations, we can ensure that we are able to preserve the beauty of our unique Welsh landscape through our farming practices.”


What is PGI Status? Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) Status is given to a product with recognised characteristics, reputation or qualities attributed to the local area. Wales now have 20 products with PGI status, including Welsh Lamb, Traditional


Welsh Caerphilly Cheese and of course Blas y Tir Pembrokeshire Earlies. “Achieving the coveted PGI status is so important to us, our farmers and the Welsh economy and we were thrilled to be awarded this accreditation” says Matt. Having this protected status means that only new potatoes grown in the soils of Pembrokeshire, can be named Pembrokeshire Earlies.


“This acts as a form of guarantee to our customers, that they can trust the integrity of the product. Having the same recognition as products like Champagne and Parma Ham, is a testament to the hard work our growers put into this iconic product.”


What makes this humble spud so unique? “Even before gaining PGI Status, the Pembrokeshire Early has always been an iconic brand, with history dating back a few decades ago!” tells Matt. “Thanks to the Gulf Stream hugging the coastline, Pembrokeshire’s


milder, relatively frost-free coastal climate is perfect for growing these potatoes, which have been grown in the county since the 1700’s. The unique climate and coastal soils work perfectly together to give our renowned Blas y Tir Pembrokeshire Earlies PGI their full flavour, fine skins and smooth, creamy texture.”
